![]() ![]() ![]() Vertical attacks beat horizontal attacks, horizontal attacks overtake barehanded moves and barehanded attacks win against verticals. This guard has a few different properties from a typical guard – your weapon glows from a faint white to a glaring red after which your character will let loose an attack that both damages your opponent and starts a rock, paper, scissor based duel. By holding RB, or your equivalent depending on platform, you initiate a guard stance. The first you’re most likely to catch onto is the new reversal edge mechanic. There are a few new and returning gameplay mechanics in Soul Calibur VI that set it apart from the previous few installments. It’s also worth noting that Inferno returns in this game you can’t use him online since he’s as broken as they come but damn is he fun – especially for Nightmare mains like myself since Inferno plays like a speedier, more powerful version of the Azure Knight. Nonetheless, Azwel is a welcome addition. Their fighting styles are quite similar, summoning the swords both for close combat and at a range. We had Algol, a ruler who could wield both the Soul weapons in Soul Calibur IV. I’ll be real here: Azwel in concept is not new. Lastly, there’s Azwel, the ruler of all humanity who utilizes the power of both Soul Edge and Soul Calibur. I guess we can chalk it up to magic but really this guy should be from the future. Honestly, I thought this guy was from the future because he’s running around the medieval with a communications earpiece and a glowing eye patch. On the other hand we have new original characters in Groh, a dark warrior who wields a double-sided blade, which he can split into two swords for varying attacks. He seems like a toolbox character with something for every situation, which I hope to put to use soon. I haven’t really played him much yet but from what I’ve seen he can actually mix up some spells via signs, which augment his play, a lot. As per Soul Calibur tradition, we have a guest character in the form of Geralt from The Witcher. Aside from those previously mentioned, we see the return of Talim, Ivy, Astaroth and more. Warning: you’re going to see some crazy shit out there! I never thought I’d see a swole Pikachu coming at me with Soul Edge… but here I am, traumatized by the event.Īnyway, while we’re talking about characters, the roster for this game consists of mostly familiar faces. These characters can also be used online. There are humans, lizardmen, malfested, automatons and more to choose from when building your own character. This time around you select one of the existing fighting styles based on the original characters, then you can change their appearance however you want. This harkens back to Soul Calibur III’s Tale of Souls mode where you also created your own character. In addition to the main campaign, there’s also an entire new story called A Libra of Souls, which revolves around custom characters you can create via the game’s Create a Character mode. For instance, Siegfried picks up after Nightmare is defeated – we play as the wandering knight attempts to redeem himself for his crimes while possessed by the cursed sword, which sets up for a sequel to this game as Siegfried attempts to summon the namesake Soul Calibur. However, I will say that once you complete the main campaign, many of the characters who were left out of the fun have their own short stories. The story itself isn’t anything special I think it could’ve done with more cutscenes, but realistically I don’t think Project Soul was focusing much on the story. A few details aside, the story plays out much like the original. Most of it is listening to the character conversations as protagonists Kilik, Maxi and Xianghua pursue the cursed sword, Soul Edge and my boy Nightmare. It took me about three hours to beat the story but I’d say you spend less than half of that actually playing. Unfortunately, due to his status as main antagonist he clearly isn’t playable in the game’s main story, which is essentially a reboot to the original. Let’s get into it.Īs I said, my main character is Nightmare – has been since the first Soul Calibur – and personally I think this is best I’ve played the Azure Knight since the third game. It isn’t the perfect game, but I can’t remember the last time I stuck with a fighting game’s online play this long. So far, I’ve racked up around 45 wins online, and a rating around 3400 with my main character, Nightmare. Sure I found the fifth installment to be enjoyable for a short time, but I’m completely hooked on six. Let me tell you – I haven’t had this much fun in Soul Calibur in quite a while. As a matter of fact, I just ended a six-hour stream of the game. The one I’ve really been putting time into? Soul Calibur VI. So we’re officially in the midst of Broketober now, gamers – we’ve got new titles coming at us every week. ![]()
